It is convenient and relatively easy to kid ourselves that if we don't
actively take sides, we are not taking sides at all, but that is rarely the case. The only circumstances in which it can really be true is if two people are having an argument in which neither is gaining the upper hand. In most situations, someone is in a dominant position and not taking sides in effect means you are siding with that person.
I assume that by "people", in this context you mean friends or at least acquaintances who are potentially friends. Of course it isn't "fair", but it's inevitable that such situations will arise and what value do you have as a person, let alone a friend, if you aren't willing to get involved? Come to that, what is a friendship worth if it can only survive providing you don't express your opinions?
