Care to explain more about how the symbolism is derived from its appearence? Does displaying it at an angle change its meaning?

That's not unique to swastikas (or however you want to spell it) or hinduism. Reversing a "good" symbol often results in an "evil" symbol. In Christianity the cross is a symbol of God/Jesus and the inverted cross is often a symbol of Satan (or St. Peter).
