Sometimes living in the US and then reading threads like this makes me feel like I have slipped down the rabbit hole into Wonderland...
Thousands of malls and stores use surveillance cameras: look up next time you go into a Wal-Mart, your bank, and even some gas stations. Make sure you smile every time you use an ATM!
Cameras focussed on the streets in town centers have been popular for years in Britain (usually they are placed very visibly to increase their value as crime deterrents), but they are used all over the US as well. Google on "surveillance cameras in city centers" and items about Chicago, Baltimore and New York appear at the top of the first page of results.
The truth is that we all have a lot less freedom and privacy than we might want to admit. And although the specifics vary, trying to argue which country is overall more or less free, would be a lot like debating whether one brand of cheap white bread is healthier than another.
