I agree that it would be a logistically tricky proposition. However, what Im stuck on is that there's a diverse mix of people on GFY and building sites may not be their shared lowest common denominator. On GFY there are

Site owners
Affiliates that build sites for traffic
designers
Affiliates that don't use sites for traffic--use landing pages or really crude (but effective) messages
Mailers
Content producers
Content distributors
Site reps -- level 1 (ie., actually able to answer questions re the program and hook people up with special deals)
Site reps -- level 2 and 3 (board personalities who can help with program info/arrangements to a degree)
Sig reps (whore is such a harsh word)
Purely Board personalities
Outsourcing firm reps
Programmers--application levels
Purely traffic generators
Toolbar / special app traffic generators
community board operators/mods (surfer boards that allow adult content)

And many others

So, what would be an contest that COVERS as much of the demographic above and be MEANINGFUL enough (both for participants and the sponsor)?

Trivia is good because all of the above can participate. Task-specific contests as you suggested, I am excited about, but the task has to be broadened enough to cover the people above's range of skills.

Something that would go to the lowest common denominator would prolly have to be something along the lines of a free site competition. Where it could be graphical or text. Who ever judges though should have full access to server stats so one shared server for the contestants would be good, also that way if the server goes down everyone is equally effected. Then maybe have it so they need to send sales to a few pre selected sponsors. Again judge would need stat access to the accounts.
Place everyone on equal footing for the most part. Then maybe set a 100.00 spending limit or something to be used on anything they want from a given list of items for sale. I say a given list so each person has same access to same resources and no special deals are cut. It even could use virtual fake money as the spending money. Again to level the playing field and make it equal.
