and nobody has yet mentioned the ugliest part of Oprah misrepresenting who child rapists actually are...which is just that, it helps to confuse and dilute the issue, detracting from the actual perpetrators. That's the main reason that this kind of slander is so harmful. The consequences are to numerous to mention but a few are:
people who know others in the adult business and know they aren't child rapists may then have doubts concerning true offenders ( "...gee, maybe this guy isn't all that guilty some people call anyone in such-and-such industry, child rapists..");
or "why should I even report such a crime if I know it to be true, hell there's a whole industry of people doing it and I wouldn't want to take on a crowd like that..";
or "...looks like there are more of em than I thought, must be systematic, must be rooted in sociological problems...";
and of course there are all those that define "normal" as that which most, or even "a lot" of people are doing, so it pushes the "it's normal" line closer, at least creates more distance from the "it's abnormal", and especially from the "it's completely fucking unacceptable"
