Well, the #1 thing a girl can do to start with is DON'T HAVE SEX WITH ANYONE WHO WOULDN'T MAKE A GOOD FATHER FOR ANY KIDS THAT MIGHT RESULT FROM THE SEX!

I'd wager most of these abuse cases are single women saddled with a child they didn't want in the first place.

A helpless child's #1 defense is parents (note the plural) who care. Studies have shown that children of single parents are statistically at significantly higher risk for just about every peril they can face, from physical and sexual abuse to disease and mental health.
