I tend to fully agree. You can also look at it from another perspective;
Why is somebody hetero?
The point being is that each and every person should follow his mind and heart and people should respect others whether they are gay, bisexual, hetero, black, yellow, white or whatever.
In highschool it's oh so easy to piss on somebody with a group of people. I used to pester a gay guy as well when I was 15-16. I regret it now, because you could actually leave some damage like Marcus said.
