I just got back from it as well...The first hour and a half are well done but it begins to get clumsy towards the end.
Spielberg has done a good job of using horrific images from contemporary events...bloated tsunami style bodies floating in a river, 9/11 urban destruction etc. He also captures a bit of the feeling of helplessness that a lot of people have these days in the USA.
A lot of the movie falls apart under scrutiny tho...Like why would the aliens bother to bury the Tripods in the past and then come for them now. And of course the anticlamactic ending of the story just doesn't work nowadays....As if the aliens wouldn't be aware they would get herpes and die here.
Also the aliens look an awful lot like the ones from ID4...maybe a bit of Spielburg humour there.
Worth the $9. The theatre I was at was maybe 30% full and this was opening day so it's hard to see it beating EP III.
