I'm a self learner too, but in all honesty I discovered that University experience (mind you, in Europe, I have no idea what universities are like in the US, aside from what I've seen in cheesy flicks) is hard to get in the line of work. I've been able to learn a lot in a very short time just by going to classes and arguing with the lecturers. Sure, some classes may be total crap, but I still value the learning experience as well as the part where you learn how much theory differs from practice and how you need to handle both. Plus, in many cases I've been able to take the easy path towards more knowledge by actually making connections with lecturers who'd appreciate my desire to learn more and pointed me in the right directions. Things you may not learn in class, but definitely not get a free ride towards in working life.
