I had a cute little ground squirrel live right by my window. I was in a basement apartment which means I was shoulder level with the yard outside. Anyways, the hole to the ground squirrels home was right in front of my window, and i would sit and watch this little guy play all day. At first he was like all wild things and would run at first sight of me. He later became use to me and got brave enough where I could open the window without scaring him away.
One morning this cute little guy was already at my window looking around inside, so I decided to take it one step further and see if i could get it to eat out of my hand. As I was returning from the fridge, I glanced up just long enough to see a hawk swoop down and pluck him from the ground in midflight and fly off with him.
I know this is a little thing to some people, but to this day I am still very heart broken and laden with guilt. Had I had just left things alone and enjoyed it from a distance, that little ground squirrel would still be alive.
