Funny, I don't remember too much yelling in Aikido, I guess I studied with quite Aikidoka for 2 years.

I was trained to exhale with a 'kiyaaa" or whatever the hell you wanted, as long as you exhaled, when I was doing Aikijitsu. Aikido is an offshoot of Aikijitsu, so I dont think it is unusual for them to exhale. But, as with anything, it depends on who your teacher/instructor is, and what he believes in.
