Of course that's one of the reasons people leave their home country. Looks like the IRS just want to extend that departure and have claims.
Somehow I don't think that comes near the word "freedom" tho may be part of these "values" :-) No other country (apart from 4 weirdo or terrorist states) treat their citizens/wanna-be-ex-citizens this way.
As an aside.. and yes, - there is complaining about "immigrants" to the US, but there is also a degree of encouragement to move to the US simply because of tax revenue. In a lifetime/part-lifetime, the govt appreciate a lump of taxes :-) The more new tax-paying citizens the better!

Sure am. That doesn't mean that is going to happen, but they do have the right to tax you for up to 10 years if they think you are denouncing your citizen ship to avoid paying taxes.
THEY OWN US. There are only a handful of countries in the world (2 or 3 if I remember correctly) that still tax there citizens when they don't live in the country. None of them except the USA pulls a stunt like that after you denounce you citizenship.
George Carlin has a great skit where he says the only real freedom we have today is if we want paper or plastic.
