See, this is exactly what the guy I am talking about means! He says that he always "looks out" for his significant other, so she should do the same. But sometimes when things happen in the heat of the moment, you don't really think about it. His girlfriend might not make a scene because perhaps she is more passive and doesn't want to have an embarassing situation...
This is exactly what the guy in question means. That his girlfriend should have "kept him safe" so that he doesn't have to go kick the other dude's ass or be humiliated in public. So I guess he does have a point then?
