(and I don't know Bill, i'm sure he's a good guy, but I just got the email from his mailing list, saying "just got back from the San Diego show" --- i hope he had a good time, but I *live* in San Diego and was on a panel at the show, and still could only spend a few hours over there, because I'm too busy with 2257 stuff. if i had a 2257 program that i was trying to get into release in time for people to buy and use, i'm not sure that's the way i would have gone

Mike I did not follow this thread closely until now. The reason we went to SD was to attend the seminar to get the latest scoop on the law (OK, Arika co-sponsored the PB too, but that was a bonus). In fact, I brought in Ben, my partner and programmer, to attend the legal updates and FSC symposium JUST so he could hear from the industry leaders and experts on the subject. I was there for 4 or 5 days, he was there for 2. The production of the software only stopped for a period of 24-36 hours, and was in a usable state before we even left town. I thought it would be important to have a working demo of course so I could show it to people who inquired about it at the show.
Anyway, the software was released to the public a couple of days ago. It was in the beta stage for about 2 weeks, during which time updates and improvements were made daily if not more as we got feedback. Of course the software is still being developed, and will continue to be worked on for quite some time. The beta versions that have been out for a couple of weeks are still working fine, and very few errors or bugs (mostly cosmetic stuff) have been found. Nevertheless, it has been ready, is being used, and is compliant as to the law as printed.
Some of the things still in developement are the server spider and the data replication modules (for sposors to be able to provide data to secondary producers). Neither of those things are relevant to the law though, they are modules for convenience to the user, to speed the process up for everyone.
