Japan is not so expensive if you like to live like a Japanese person. I stay at a Japanese style in in Tokyo that is 5 min walk to a major train station. I can be anywhere in Central Tokyo in less that 45 minutes. The "ryookan" is only $43 a night. Hell, I stay two or three weeks at a time. Extremely clean and friendly folks.
The subways, trains, and buses are cheap, efficient, timely, and the directions are easy to understand.
If you eat pork, chicken, ramen, curry, udon, rice and pickles, the cost of food is reasonable.
What cost a lot are steaks, western style hotel rooms, booze, and private transportation. Just what western tourists use. No wonder the list is not very accurate for a person wanting to experience immersion in the local culture instead of a postcard viewing of museums in a tour group.
