Nagios is a great piece of software. It's not too hard to configure, but if you're not comfortable installing Linux applications, it'll be a "bear".

I use Nagios and custom code to monitor the servers and sites that I'm responsible for. For me Nagios is a good general catch-all, but my custom software extends monitoring and makes monitoring flexiable and easy.

I'd highly reccomend Nagios. It's widely used, so if you need any help installing / configuring it, there is a ton of online support.
