Yes, it's a bitch when they close groups, seemingly arbitrarily. I'm sure they wont close Groups down altogether though. They've been around for a long time (since before Yahoo bought them) and generate nice revenue for Yahoo.
RE: email capturing. The legit way would be to start a newsletter and encourage your members to join.
