I hate to burst your barbecue bubble, though hamburgers are a staple in my diet (had one for breakfast), they really don't make up an "American barbecue". They are usually included for the kids, yes, but a "real" barbecue will usually have chicken, ribs, steak, pork chops, bratwurst, and maybe fish or shrimp. Plenty of barbecue sauce and other seasonings. Sometimes there will be other foods like fresh grilled vegetables and salads, but often at my house we just do meat and beer.
Hamburgers are almost an everyday item here.

Haha. To meal Real BBQ is either pork ribs, beef ribs, pork butt, beef brisket and well sometimes chicken. BBQ should take 4-12 hours to cook and be done low and slow over hardwood only. Everything else is ussually just grilling.
