I have an extra computer sitting around and was thinking of putting Linux on it to mess around with. I will not be a power user or anything.

What is the difference between Red Hat, Debian, Suse, Lindows etc...?

If a program is for Linux, will it run on any of those?

Also, I want to have access to files on Windows computers on my network too.
