With Jaws, the timing of it was everything. Back in the 70's movies were just starting to use some rather fancy special effects and were willing to invest huge dollars in such technology. Not to mention that it played upon everyone's natural fear of sharks and being eaten by one. Up until that movie most people had never seen a shark bight a person in half. It was phenomenal really, the level of horror that movie generated.

Young people today are used to big-budget movies with even more modern and elaborate effects, so many of them simply won't "get it" about a movie like Jaws. Too bad, movies like that don't come along every day, or every decade for that matter.
