from what I understand the prosecution basically lost this case. The first charge was that he was trying to kidnapp the kid and extort the family. I guess there was next to no evidence of this but they went ahead with it anyway. If they hadn't added that charge on they would have never had to put the mother on the stand and the jury would have only seen the kids and it would have been a case of who is more credible. But by putting this charge on it opened the door for the defense to use the conspiricy theroy defense which they did successfully.
If the government wants more convictions they should pay thier prosecutors more. Most of them stay around for a few years to learn the ropes then go into private practice to make some money.
