I once flew from Chicago to Atlanta. We took off in a storm and it was bumby going out. We went through some intense turbulence and people were literaly holding onto their seats. The pilot changed flight paths east then west. Changed altitudes many times all to no avail. He assured everyone the plane was fine and just to hang on and we'll be there soon. After about 45 mins everything was calm and there was no more turbulence. The pilot came on the intercom to tell everyone he was going to turn seatbelt required sign off and we could wander through the plane and stretch our legs. Half way through him saying this the plane must have dropped a good 5000 feet. He came back on the intercom and said, "Folks, just hang on. I'll get us to Atlanta as fast as I can." There were a lot of people thankful to get off that plane alive in Atlanta.
