I actually shoot at various people's houses and that enables them to attend and watch behind the scenes (plus the model's do some private shots - non-sexual - with the person who hosts the shoot).
I rarely shoot in studios, so I'm always on the lookout for new places to shoot (residential or commercial), and I love to shoot with unusual or interesting looking props.
I don't invite non-essential people to photo sessions because it can be chaotic enough with models, a make-up artist(s), photographers (I usually shoot with at least two video cameras), plus whomever the models may have brought along (significant other, friend, manager, etc).
It's a lot more work than you might imagine, usually hot (I really need to buy a cooler lighting system), and the more people you have, the harder it is to control the noise (that can end up on video), not to mention the distractions that can occur.
Anyone who has a location to offer up (I mostly shoot on the West Coast), please e-mail and we can discuss it.
