It's about advertizing! Nothing more, nothing less.
There aren't enough breaks in "soccer" to appeal to the US advertizer. Doesn't mean it's not a good sport, just that it's not marketable in the US.
I am a huge NFL Football fan, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the world cup til now. Moreover, when the US beats Germany in a couple hours I will be loving it even more!!
