Marx was talking about capitalism, not democracy.
IMO what Bush and his cronies are doing to America is almost an exact parallel to what happens in Sinclair Lewis's "It Can't Happen Here". If you get a chance, pick up this book. It was written in 1935, basically a charismatic politician who pretends to be a man of the people but whom is actually controlled by corporations is elected against the protests of the more educated and rational people in America. It's a disputed election. He talks about "liberating" people, but passed unconstitutional laws taking away the rights of American citizens. He takes control of both congress and the supreme court, rendering them unable to keep his power in check, and turns the US into a fascist dictatorship. Everyone in America who thinks their country is immune to fascism should read this book. It was written in the 30s, and it reads like a biography of the Bush presidency.
