The first reaction is to have 100 officers clod-hopping their way thru the case and in the process screwing up scene of crime and witness statements.

Then.. when they get noplace, the clue hits them to get expert help, but by that time, it's so contaminated they have no chance.

I watched a similar instance where a young couple were on a beach in a car - the guy was shot and the body in the boot of the car. The girl was never found. The morning after, that beach had everyone and their dogs wandering over it and screwing up any clues that may have been there. Four weeks later, after several showers, they had the brilliant idea of getting a dog in to track her. She has never been found so far, nor any charges laid.
