if your just starting off, I would suggest getting Propellerheads Reason. Its got a cheap version of every hardware you need from EQs to compressors to FX. Itll really help you understand the functionalities of everything out there, so when your ready to spend some serious money, youll know what you need and what you dont and youll know how to work everything.
If your looking to do a lot of MIDI production, go with CuBase SX and a Mach 5 sampler hooked up to a midi keyboard. Mach5 supports every audio file format from MPC to Roland V cards to you name it.
If your planing on doing a lot of audio recording then I would suggest ProTools (you can get an Mbox for like 500 bucks and itll serve as a recording interface and Protools)
