Most people will happily spend $500 on a decent gun. I personally believe there is nothing wrong with this if you are properly trained with one and you don't mind getting brains splattered all over yourself and the sofa. The hope is that they're not yours.
I would tend towards getting good solid doors, windows and locks with a security system than the gun because in my nice safe neighborhood there is more chance kids blow their brains out from their parents gun than an attackers.
It depends where you live, who you associate with, what you do for a living, do you have kids, etc. etc.

Thank god a mature intelligent reasoning person. Yes, you should know that lethal force is ALWAYS a last resort, not the first line of defense. I can't install an alarm due to building manager's say so (although I am thinking about doing it anyway) and getting that dog (although my gal would probably kill me).
