Repair is dependant on a number of factors. What type of break is it? If it is a compression or crushing break, there may not be enough bone left to repair. They can sometimes use mesh and grafts to repair some bone loss. The next biggest issue is infection. Once the bone breaks and pokes through the skin, the marrow is exposed to contaminants. Serious infection and/or the severity of the injury dictate wether a repair or amputation is done. If they didnt amputate, Id bet ya that person now walks with a limp lol.
