I can quote the great Carl Sagan and say its scary thinking about life elsewhere, but its more scary thinking about that we are alone.
Even with worst case scenario of Drake's equation, its highly possible that there are other civilizations, but let us just be realistic and say that they have no interest in contacting us, if they are far beyond our technology.
Just go some miles out in space and look at us; We are running around killing each other, our technology is based on weapon development, the leaders takes no responsibility when it comes to protection of the enviroment. Besides our own species, the humans can't even communicate civilized with each other. And not to mention, from the book; we even killed the son of God!
If you look at the history, humans were traveling and discovered new land and motivation was always the same; to gain property. Now if an alien was thinking that way, we would be exterminated long time ago. If they have other intentions, why should they even bother with our nature? Why should their share their knowledge with us?
If they have the technology to travel lightyears, they probably also have another view of timespan than us. They are patient, and probably no contact will be done from their side, until we are able to survive and establish colonies in outer space some thousands years from now. So until then, if we survive our self-destructive nature, we just have to keep dreaming and watch Spielberg movies. We are nothing compared to them...
