They do it because they have a desire to be part (take credit) for something larger than themselves in order to promote their own personal significance. To convince themselves, if not the rest of the world, that they really matter and that their lives have significance.
Human behaviour is not always rational, and this is a good example.
Celebrating other people's win as your own is rather pathetic.
