Most classes I've seen the first half of the session is stretching and exercises before the training. That's more beneficial than the actual martial arts training (which does have workout benefit itself). If that's what keeps someone on an excercise regime you can hardly call it not useful for 21st century man
Also, most classes I've seen have been 50% or so women.
