Yes, more significant is that a stop payment has limited value. I learned the hard way about something called holder in due course under the UCC. If the payee takes the check to a check cashing place and they accept the check you will need to pay it regardless of a stop payment unless the person who cashes the check commits fraud or forgery regard the act of cashing the check.
