Actually, the thought that the general population in elder days married at a young age is a myth. Other than royalty, who were often married through arrangements with other families, and the occasional fringe-religion based marrage, the median age for women over the last 200 years has remained in the low 20's.
This is based on statistics from the US and the UK.
