that's called 'realpolitik' and it's identified primarily with the USSR's way of doing business. It's an amoral and ultimately evil philosophy that reduces men to nothing more than self-interested animals without any empathy for human beings not lucky enough to be born on this particular patch of soil.
It's necessary to be a little more far-sighted than that to bring about any advances in our society as a whole.
