That's a fucked up story.
I have a little story too. About five years ago, lived in a shitty area with lotsa crackheads, etc. It was friday and we put up clothes to dry up on the balcony (it was 2nd floor). Then on Sat. morning, when my parents were sleeping, there was a knock on the door. A skinny crackhead was at the door holding female underwater and claiming it dropped from the balcony. I wanted to take it from him but he insisted to see my mom and confirm that it was really hers. He was about halfway in the house. So I went quickly to my parents room and when I turned around, he was already wandering in the house. Of course my mom said it was hers and took it. Then he left the house. (Lets not talk about the shit I got from my parents for that)
Anyways, it was about five years ago but thank god, we didn't have any break-in or anything. Generally speaking, he just wanted to scour the house for some expensive goods, but didn't find anything too expensive to steal and then sell.
Conclusion - you never know when and if they're gonna hit you. In your case, I would really get surveillance and secure the entrances/windows more extensively. I'd put those steel bars around every window, and make sure the doors have a couple of locks on them. As well as hook up an alarm system when any of these entrances are broken. (I dont really know how alarm systems work so don't flame me about that
)
