The truly odd thing about the whole story is that it was in newsweek ELEVEN DAYS before someone managed to get it into the news. 11 days is 11 eternities in the news world.
Yesterday the state dept. was calling for a retraction because the apology wasn't good enough. Today they said the retraction is a 'good start, but more needs to be done'. All the while, they are still investigating the alleged incident. ie: it could be true, they just dont know yet.
