Yes, I thought about that too. On average, one static .jpg thumb is between 5-7kb each on regular tgp's. In the flash format with opacity animation it's around 13kb, so it's not a huge difference.
And the site would load by sections, so the main thing is to make the top section as small as possible, and the surfer can enjoy the top section while the buttom ones load.
