You were right the first time, he acts like an idiot but that doesn't mean he really is one. His advice about love and relationships are ok rules for high school but moronic for adults.
That said, a lot of what he does is schtick, he admits it, and he's entertaining. I listen to him when the gf isn't in the car, she can't stand him ;)
