Dude, like the guy in the commercial says -- "I'm not just the hair club president, I'm also a client..."
I've been on more online dates than anybody I ever met -- no joke -- and I've seen EVERYTHING.
Lots of people use pictures of themselves that are no longer reflective of their current appearance -- they HAD hair, they HAD teeth, they WERE thin, they were not a crack addict ONCE, etc.
That makes sense -- sorta -- people just trying to put a good foot forward and increase their chances.
But why some people use totally fake pitctures (as in, it's not even THEM) remains a mystery to me. It's not like the profile is fake -- there is a REAL person there, just NOT the person in the pictures. They put work into putting the profile together, and spend time on the site.
My only guess is there is a form of gratification for them in the fantasy of pretending to be someone they are not. Part of the awe and wonder of online (as GFYers surely know) is that we have the opportunity here to create an indepedent persona in this strange realm, perhaps wholly different from who we are OFFline.
This freaks a lot of people out -- and I guess I can understand that, when you show up for coffee expecting to meet "A" and "W" shows up, instead.
But then it's really also very cool -- it's another way to express ourselves, to explore the realm of fantasy in a way not possible with costumes or accents or wigs. Consider Chio, whom we all love.
