Emphasise on pure design is what mainstream clients tend to look for in the higher end.
Meaning if ya can pull out of your hat more or less original concepts in illustration and design you will excell very well.

I am not so strong in the mainstream thing I will admit that much
Many mainstream companies already have a presence on the net and will hand you a complete book on the specifications for design on there websites.
I created the website for INTEL's MMX technology website some years ago and NORTEL Networks. Also did some design work Infomercial companies.
Design is very daunting with the specification parameters often enough from these large corporations.
Lack of freedom in design is what scared me away from pursueing mainstream, while adult has allowed me to experiment with concepts and keep my knife sharp while keeping a fast pace.
