apparently you haven't seen Alfa Romeo cars in 70s. Also most of the exotic sport cars have italian engine. Maserati, buggati,ferrari, lamborghini.

Alas, apart from driving a Ferrari 308 and a 355 the only experience I have of Italian engines is of multiple rides in a friend's Fiat 126. I only have to hear a buzzing noise of a similar pitch and I get flashbacks...
Italian engines are either superb or utter crap. Unfortunately most of the good ones are in cars I'll never get to experience...
