Agreed there are mostly nerdizoids at those conventions....

however, the shows were anything but substandard.
The original series was unique at the time (the 60's), and held an incredible fascination to it's audience.
TNG was excellently produced, great plots and writing (for the most part), well-cast and proved itself worthy of the original series.
DS9 took the show a step farther, loved it.
Voyager - Got a little ridiculous with the whole "Kayzon" thing and "the Borg children" episodes were a bit much.... but I still enjoy reruns of that series.

The newest series with Scot Bakula is the only one that has never caught my interest. I watched a few episodes and it just didn't do much for me for some reason.

But to each their own I suppose. What do you watch? Is "Earth: final conflict" more your speed?
