I see where you're going with this question, but A) people in the same age bracket (16-19) usually don't think too much about it, they are too close in age, plus the age of consent (for sex) is pretty much 14-16 in most parts of N America, and B) The article only says the girl was "under the age of 18"... it doesn't say just how much under 18 she is.
