Well, depending on how strong your "ties" are, I would say you pretty much answered your own question. In fact, you may want to be a little proactive and do exactly what you suggested and go around them (not even necessarily to get the work) and let them know that they are relying on the unreliable
If the "ties" are not that strong, tell the fucks that your are insulted that they would even suggest that you work so cheaply given the caliber of your end product and given your reputation in the industry
