could be a number of problems ...

the first thing you said was having problems veiwing pictures ... are you uploading them in ascii ? If so thats a problem there all text files like files with the following extensions should be uploaded in ascii:

txt, php, html, shtml, pl, and cgi

the rest of your files should be uploaded in binary including pictures and movies:

jpg, gif, bpm, png, mov, ram, mpg, and avi

I would start trying to resolve the problem there.
