Incorrect sire.
The French were figthing to hold on to South Vietnam. They asked the U.S. for help plenty of times before they were massacred at Dien Bien Fu. That was the last of the French. Then the U.S. moved in.
There is plenty of speculation as to why the U.S. refused to help the French in the first place hold on to their colony, but the fact is we refused to help them when they were suffering bitter defeats, and getting their arses handed to them. When one of their lost stronghold's were overrun, then the French left.
