I think AVS would be a really good starting point for you.
Its less upfront expense and you can learn how to convert the traffic that comes to your own site instead of handing traffic off to a sponsor.
As far as keeping more of the money for yourself, these are the numbers I would crunch.
How many sales per day am I sending to sponsors?
How much will the initial cost of opening the paysite be? (content, design, server, tracking software, visa fees, etc)
How much will the ongoing cost of opening the paysite be?(content updates, bandwidth expense etc)
If you're making 60% recurring now, then the extra 40% you'll make by having your own site has to be enough to cover all of the expenses involved with running the paysite. (This of course assumes that you'll be able to convert and retain members as well as the sponsors you're currently using)
Also you have to look at how long it will take you to recoup the initial expenses.
