Is mulatto the appropriate term?

I had some bitch start yelling at me because I said "mulatto" one time (and it wasn't in a derogatory way either). I was like "what should I say?" and she said "mixed". I think that's bullshit personally, and so did my friend who was standing next to me, and his sister is half black half white.
