Why not?
Turn him INTO a member. When he sees he's getting a direct response from YOU, that personalizes it (I'm assuming he's a surfer now, and not a webmaster).
Certainly don't spend hours on end emailing or talking on the phone with the guy, but if I was willing to spend money on someone's paysite, and they showed interest in my concerns with direct contact, it might make me think twice about joining THAT site as opposed to one that just wants my money.
